FOCUS GROUP – Vesuvian Municipalities: CITIZENS TAKE THE FLOOR

Starting this year, the Europe Direct Paesi Vesuviani center has joined the Italian and European network managed by the European Commission. As a new local point of reference, we believe it is crucial not only to get to know our community, but to truly listen to it—giving space to our citizens' opinions, needs, and expectations regarding EU policies and active citizenship.

We act as an intermediary between the European Union and local citizens: while we are committed to sharing EU news and opportunities across our area, we also carry the responsibility of bringing local voices directly to the European Union.

We want to understand what residents of the Vesuvian area think about the European Union, how engaged they feel in democratic participation, which channels they use to stay informed, and to what extent they perceive the EU's presence in their daily lives.

To answer these questions, we have chosen an established qualitative social research method: the focus group. This format provides a structured space for dialogue, allowing us to gather direct, participatory insights from those who live and work in the region.

Specifically, we are offering a series of 5 focus groups.

Each focus group will target a specific audience and focus on one or more of the European Commission’s seven priorities for 2024–2029. Each session will:

  • Take place in person, lasting approximately 2 hours;

  • Involve an ideal group size of 10 participants (minimum 7, for a total of 50 participants);

  • Be facilitated by a pair of experts using participatory methodologies;

  • Use pre- and post-session evaluation tools to streamline organization, measure satisfaction, and share findings via social media and networking channels.

Target Groups

The sessions will involve youth and students, citizens, civil society representatives, youth workers, and local decision-makers from the Vesuvian area.

Objective

The goal of this initiative is to help shape the center’s future programming and strengthen Europe Direct Paesi Vesuviani as a key local hub for dialogue with the European Union—fostering greater citizen participation in European information and consultation processes.
